This spring semester, I have a graduate class in multinational enterprises. Half of my peers, as well as the professor, have presented papers that underscore an empirical fact: people and places benefit from trans-national capitalism when the people in those places are educated. It is the one variable that seems to correlate well across experiences.

It is not just that reading brings you ideas from other people, places and times, widening your intellectual inventory -- though there is that -- but WRITING allows you to identify and organize your own thoughts, making you a better actor, a better agent.
