Peter Levin’s Rethinking Markets

Maligne Lake

Academic Identity

I am assistant professor of Sociology at Barnard College. My book (and my dissertation research) is a comparative study of technology and futures trading, an ethnography of open outcry and electronic traders. My current research is on how art specialists price cultural commodities, particularly how categories and commensuration work in the secondary/resale fine arts market. I teach courses in economic sociology, organizations, and gender.

Professional Identity

I occasionally consult, focusing on organizational change, the future of technology and financial markets, and environmental markets. I do strategic assessments of markets, technology and organizational design, with qualitative and quantitative components. If you are interested, please email me.

Personal Identity

I grew up outside Chicago, and went to school(s) at Wesleyan University, USC, and Northwestern University. I currently live in New York, with a partner who is a marketing manager for an educational nonprofit. I love movies, like to cook, and I can do a mean lindy swing out. I am INTP.

Can I ask?

Filed under: Ramble — Peter @ 12:12 pm

Does anyone really read my blog at my site? Or is it mostly RSS reader?

I’ve been spending less time on Google Reader and more going to sites lately - I want to ’slow down’ a bit, plus I have been trying to enjoy more the aesthetics of what is said as well as the content of what is said.

I usually start with RSS (that’s how I’m alerted to new content) but then often migrate over here to read the post.

Dang, see this is kinda what I expected, and I was all proud of my website design skillz, or at least I’ve been pseudo-inspired by this - JSM’s site is effective redesigned within a concept for each post.

you can watch all those videos i posted!

Salt, you mean you can embed in RSS I take it. I’m a bit out of the embedding gig myself, for two reasons. First, it is not standards compliant, and as you might suspect, I’m OCD’ing on the web design a bit. Second, and more importantly, I’m thinking about recalling my content to my own site from the various locales it currently resides. I’ve been thinking about Web 2.0, content creation, who benefits (monetary compensation, cognitive compensation, etc), and this post from Zeldman on the ‘vanishing personal site’.

Flig flog, just musing a bit in the comments.

Never RSS, always at your (vanishing) personal site

I think you have your answer, but I’ll just add mine: RSS, but I’ll eventually pop in if there’s a new post. JSM’s typography and layout are very elegant but I find those concept-icons way too distracting.
